Is it possible to access someone else's viber without access to the phone?

Several of my contacts in Viber received notifications about the change of my phone number and my contact's name changed in their lists.
No one could get physical access to my phone. I don't install Trojans. I have been using a SIM card for ten years now. The new phone number belongs to a carrier that I have never used.
I don't quite understand how this is even theoretically possible. Some new vulnerability? An internet search turned up no such complaints.
To protect the history of correspondence, I deactivated the account and created a new one for the same number, but I think it's too late, since enough time has passed. Now others have two of my contacts on their Viber lists. I did not think that this was possible without SMS codes and other things.
