In addition to the phenomena described in other answers, the speed can be negatively affected by crookedly installed / removed programs, junk programs often installed by users in large quantities, viruses / trojans, incorrect swap file settings, lack of space on the system disk, processor throttling due to littered cooling systems (especially for laptops), slowly dying HDD.
so-called. Cleaning the registry with all sorts of ccleaners, as a rule, does not solve the problem, and often leads to glitches and new brakes.
If you want to speed up the system - buy a more or less large decent SSD, in no case follow the advice on "optimizing" the system for SSD, such as reducing the paging file, disabling, or transferring to the HDD, transferring the temp to the HDD, put more memory if it less than 8-16GB (depending on the tasks), run Why So Slow and/or LatencyMon to rule out a possible problem with the brakes caused by crooked drivers. Of course, WIN should be installed from a clean distribution, and not from assemblies that contain a bunch of garbage and "optimizations". The hard drive can be defragmented periodically, but that won't help much.
