Is an equipment lease agreement between individuals legally binding?

Can an individual rent out some equipment, such as a household appliance, to other individuals by entering into an equipment rental agreement with them. Is this activity legal? If so, what taxes do you need to pay? Can such an agreement act as a guarantor of the return of the device in good condition instead of a deposit, which usually significantly reduces the likelihood of a deal.
