Is @2x still relevant for retina displays?

Actually a subject. I am interested in the question because I am studying in the old courses, and in the new xcode there are no files with the same name in the project files, unlike the examples in the course.

Actual, but not fashionable
Now the trend is to use the catalog for art - Asset Catalog. This is a special container that allows you to avoid these wildest crutches with suffixes and present all your pictures in a convenient way. But there are situations when the asset catalog will not work. In my practice, I have come across only two scenarios:
1) Mask;
2) Localization;
then you can't do without these @2x and @3x. Moreover, everything is going to the fact that @2x will soon become the standard. In iPhone applications, non-retina images are no longer used, next year it will affect iPads ...
PS oh, I forgot. Now trendy vector and plane interfaces

The new Xcode itself is responsible for all this - you can not specify.

I think you should try using AutoLayout.
