I would advise you to pay attention to Vectortuts . A huge number of detailed lessons of different levels. He himself mastered the illustrator in the first place on it. I chose an interesting lesson, preferably more difficult, and got down to business. In the process, I just learned the various tools and capabilities of the illustrator. This was enough to get started.
Very cool from Digital Tutors, from scratch, English is accessible and everything is very clear from their videos.
Highly recommend, simple, fast and really effective.
Files are attached to the lessons to complete tasks, i.e. you can train in parallel with the video on their examples.
You can find it on any English-language tracker and even in contact in design publics.
The very basics are here:
Digital-Tutors - Beginners Guide to Vector Drawing in Illustrator
Creating Custom Patterns in Illustrator
Creating Ornate Logo Type in Illustrator
There are more complex and also clear.
Series from Lynda.com. Video tutorials, for example: Illustrator CS5 Essential Training.
it's on the root tracker ;)
