How will a 4pin fan work in a 3pin motherboard? At maximum speed?

There is an old motherboard with 3pin connectors, it controls the voltage of the fans properly. If I connect a 4pin fan to such a connector, will it be able to control its rotation (of course not through pwm, but also by voltage) or will it operate at maximum speed?

If the pinout matches - why not? ...

At rated voltage, it will work at maximum speed.
At a voltage below the nominal - at a lower rotation speed
, pwm control is precisely control, and not a DC / DC converter in order to take more current at a lower voltage and spin at nominal speed.
PS: they have the same pinout, as well as the key on the connector. The problem can only be from the geometric size, does the extra contact interfere with some other elements of the motherboard
