How to work with the xneur program?

installed xneur. seems to be successful. did not appear in the tray. launched through the search for applications. the inscription "xneur started" was displayed, a terrible sound appeared when you type, hits the brain like a woodpecker. moved the icon to the toolbar. by clicking on the xneur icon, nothing happens, the settings do not open, and by the way, when you write in the wrong layout, nothing changes. I could remove the terrible sound only by stopping the program with pkill xneur. there was an inscription that the program was stopped. How can I set up this program and how should it work in general? ps do not judge strictly, newbie in ubuntu.

@Ocelot

xneur is a daemon that performs basic functions;
gxneur is a client that allows you to change settings and displays a tray icon. It needs to be run separately.

PKM on the icon in the tray> settings (preferences)
is there enough mind?
no? I'll try to chew it (itself such, without brains :=)
