How to work with ASTM protocol on serial port?

The device works via serial port according to ASTM. When the exchange starts, the device sends a signal
[05] to the terminal, I have to send a signal [06], I send it, but there is no further response from the device, although there should be more data. Who knows how to properly organize data exchange?
