How to win games "What? Where? When?”, “Brain Ring”, etc.?

Good afternoon!
I understand that the question is clearly not for this site, but it seems to me (for some reason) that the local public might know something about this.
He took part in several intellectual games. It's a mixture of ChGK, Brain Ring, quizzes, etc. And, it just so happened, he played extremely badly. Questions in such games (mostly) on some historical knowledge or logic (very rarely and not always "logical").
As it turned out, I am very bad at these historical events. It seems that somewhere I missed a lot in basic education.
So, what to read in order to improve all this knowledge and show yourself well in such games? Or am I digging in the wrong place? Or are these games meaningless? Or am I just dumb?
Thanks a lot for the replies :)
