How to validate a pure css form using invalid and placeholder-shown pseudo-classes?

I read in an article that you can validate a pure CSS form using a combination of the :placeholder-shown and :invalid pseudo-classes and the :not property. I'm trying to reproduce this in the form below, but I can't get it to work. Validation in the example itself also fails to check
