How to use IRC chat with the desktop client?

Let's say I know the channel #wikipedia-ru, I know the host freenode.net, I go through webchat.freenode.net/ , everything is ok.
What I can't do:
Register my nick with /msg nickserv register yourpassword youremail
(nothing happens)
Use the desktop client. For example Miranda.

When I connect to the #wikipedia-ru room, I am alone there.
Questions:
1) How to register your nickname?
2) How to set up the client?

What should happen? /msga command that sends a message to the user in private. The Freenode network has a bot - nickserv, which deals with registration, authorization, etc. This is what I mean, this command has nothing to do with the client that you use and works everywhere, and that the user registration process in each network can be different. But specifically in Freenode, you are doing everything right.

Try downloading a normal, dedicated IRC client: X-Chat, Kvirc, mIRC, or add a new server to mirand (unfortunately, I don't remember how to do it in it).
Connect to server irc.freenode.net, port 8001.
100% everything will be fine, it just cannot be something wrong.
