How to update host machine and Lxc containers?

Good afternoon.
There is Ubuntu 14 with lxc containers on the same Ubuntu 14.
How to transfer everything to 16th correctly?
Probably it is necessary to start with host, but I think then the guest will not work on the new core and how to update it then. If you start with guest machines, then it's not at all clear how it will behave with the kernel.
And it is not clear whether each container needs to be updated from the inside, there are many of them, some solution to a typical problem may already have been invented.
In general, the question is simple, if you had a similar experience, please share how you did it, what kind of rake did you solve?

@prodimon

First, update the host machine apt dist-upgrade
And then, if you want, the container itself.
I did not observe any problems if the container is 14.04 and the host is 16.04
