How to update CMS from github?

Good day to all and Happy Victory Day!
Please help me to clarify one issue.
Tell me how to update cms from Github?
The developer regularly updates the product, but we do not stand still and make our own improvements to its system, how can we update and not lose our codes?

make a fork of the cms project, make your edits there and periodically merge with the master.
If the changes are useful - take them out to the forums for discussion and offer pull requests.
