How to understand the cause of Ubuntu freezes on a laptop?

There is a laptop Lenovo Ideapad 330 (rather new and productive). It is running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Everything is fine, but the laptop often freezes tightly. This one looks like this: Suddenly, the reaction to the keyboard and mouse slows down sharply. The movement of the mouse becomes jerky, after a minute the mouse cursor generally changes position no more than 30 seconds, the cooler spins up to the maximum, then the computer completely stops responding to the keyboard and mouse. Only the power button helps. Exit to the console by CTRL + ALT + F2 to see what's going on is impossible. There are two specific things that cause the hang:
- Working with VirtualBox. I run different versions of Windows there. Tried changing versions, updating kernels... Nothing helps. The operation of the guest system lasts from 5 minutes to an hour, but then a guaranteed freeze.
- Opening some specific pages in Google Chrome (I suppose containing some kind of exotic media banners). In general, it is surprising that the site can hang the entire system, but what about process isolation !?
I can't find anything special in /var/log/syslog at the moment of freezes. Where to dig? What to search? I'm already thinking about just selling this laptop and not buying Lenovo anymore.

Linux sometimes freezes due to incorrect processor frequency scaling. Also, the problem may be in the power mode. It is necessary to correct the settings according to the documentation for the processor and power system. On desktop PCs, this is decided including maximum performance. Perhaps there is a bug in your kernel version related to these functions. In the end, it's easier to refuse and buy a compatible one.

Familiar. Look at memory and CPU usage. Loaded at 100% Linux ugly stupid.

What is the memory consumption during hangups?
what about the disk and swap at this time?
Does Alt+SysRq+F help?
to determine "where the legs grow from", try to disable in bios all features related to kernel power saving modes.
