I also asked this question, it was not possible to turn off the screen completely. Or close the lid, or turn off the backlight.
I generally put a macbook under an external monitor and work with two.

I ended up buying myself an external keyboard, and I'm working with the lid closed and the power connected.
I do not recommend doing this, air in macbooks is taken in through the slots in the keyboard, and is blown out in the area of the screen. If the lid is closed, there may be ventilation problems.
I was also puzzled by this issue, I don’t want to close the lid when using an external monitor! Since I think the ventilation will be worse, although the Americans write on their forums that even with the lid closed, the ventilation is not disturbed and you don’t have to worry about it! But this is not the main thing! Even though I use an external keyboard and mouse when my monitor is connected, my MBP has a touchbar and touch ID that I use all the time! Therefore, closing the lid is not an option at all! And plus everything, the macbook starts to warm up when an external monitor is connected (via type C). I can assume that the load increases on the system due to the fact that the laptop has to spend the resource on two monitors at once! Today we managed to solve this problem, installed a simple DisableMonitor program thanks to the American forums)) By pressing one button, the laptop monitor can be turned off! It is to disable, and not reduce the brightness to zero! It doesn't seem to get that hot anymore! Good luck to all!
You can try Ctrl+Shift+Eject.
I turn off the laptop monitor with this combination, but, unfortunately, I can’t check how it works on the external monitor.
and if you try a hot corner in which Put display to sleep, then close the lid and open it again after a couple of seconds? Turns on?
