How to track the arrival of a new VK message?

I am writing an extension for Google Chrome. The essence of the extension is that in the personal correspondence of VK with the help of embedded JS, one word is replaced with another.
Problem: how to understand that a new message has arrived? Implement a timer check - for this it is necessary to tear off hands on the spot. On the chrome.tabs event. onUpdated .addListeneristener is not responsive.
