How to start learning Java+Android?

I don't even know where to begin to study this bundle. From the abundance of everything, eyes widen ... I
have little experience in programming, in Java I have reached arrays (sort of sorted it out).
I read on one forum that here is a good bunch of books:

• Eckel Bruce "Java Philosophy"
  
• Retro Mayer "Programming for Android"

It seems to me that the best idea to learn any language is to just start using it, relying on Google and books. Come up with a small application and try to implement it. That's all.
