How to split google maps into squares?

It is necessary to break the whole map into squares of different sizes, small squares in the city area, large ones somewhere in the steppes, should be clickable.
In which direction is it better to move? overlays? polygons? maybe there are solutions?

Most maps are already divided into tiles. In practice, it is easier to make the same dimensions.
Ready open source solution - leafleet , for example.
If you need irregularly shaped clickable regions, you can see how they do it in OSM or get acquainted with the Google KML format.
