How to split an existing partition?

Question from a beginner.
I installed Ubuntu, two partitions were created during installation: as I understand it, some kind of boot and main (with Ubuntu installed).
Is it possible now to split the main partition into more partitions and, say, change the file system on one of them?
How to do it?

No. These are root (root) and swap (paging).
It is necessary to reduce the size of root and create a new partition on the freed space. This will be done through a Live CD using Gparted.

Good evening.
Of course you can.
With gparted.
Run, enter the password, right-click on the selected partition and select "Change Partition / Move." A window will open in which you can select a new partition size. Free up some space. Apply changes. Then create a new partition in the free space. When creating, you can change the file system. Does it just need to be changed?
If gparted is not installed on the system, then run the command in the console
sudo apt-get intsll gparted
