How to speed up remote LAN access via openVPN (Windows Server 2008)?

Made access to Windows Server 2008 through OpenVPN.
The server has access to individual directories. I connect from a computer client, I have access to remote directories.

The problem is that all file operations are VERY slow. Opening a directory with 5 files takes about 10 seconds. I am silent about launching any exe or jar application from the server... Internet connection at both ends is 100Mbps for the download and 50Mbps for the applet.

I googled the information that access to the file system on windows via the Internet (even without vpn) is very problematic, because. The SMB protocol on which this all revolves is not at all sharpened for TCP / IP.

I would like to ask the community if there are other options, how can I solve such a problem (staying on Windows)?
Thank you!

@Drno

Are you using samba via vpn?))) Bring
up webdav...
But actually launching applications this way is not a very good option. For this, there is, for example, a remote app.
And opening files - webdav
