Writes that index.html is not found in the root.
How can I make git look for this file in app/ or /build ?

There is a GitHub Pages block in the repository settings. There is a Source parameter that specifies how to load your site. And it's either from the root or from the docs folder.
In answer to your question, no. You need to rename the build folder to docs.
