How to set up a main domain on Route53 with the same CNAME as its subdomains without error?

What is the point? I have a main domain:
example.com
This domain has subdomains:
api.example.com
www.example.com
....
etc.

Subdomains are directed to the ELB balancer
How can I point the main domain to the same balancer without error?
(InvalidChangeBatch 400: RRSet of type CNAME with DNS name example.com. is not permitted at apex in zone example.com.)

Do I have to remove:
NS, MX, SOA records for the same domain
