How to set the root directory in the directory my site/public on hosting?

There is a hosting on which several sites are spinning. Loaded another site and got the message "You need to set your "document root" to the public folder inside your project." As far as I understand, the site requires server settings - my-site/public should become the root directory. How to be in that case?
