Is it possible to search for Chrome extensions by category, how is it implemented in FF?

You can if you use the English version of the extension gallery. Probably soon it will be in Russian. You can switch to the English version by clicking "Google in english" on the main Google. Or in the settings, find the language switch. The second option is to use third party sites with extensions like www.chromeextensions.org/

no. Apparently, when adding extensions to a directory, there is no such thing as a category. Might appear in the future

Perhaps Google considered the categories “most popular”, “newest”, “best rated”, “recommended” to be exhaustive. Perhaps some kind of innovation? (;
