How to restore OS X on iMac?

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 8.1 on an iMac and OS X crashed. Now compatibility issues, lack of drivers, and half of the devices do not work as they should. Smart people suggested that you need to restore OS X, and it is hardwired somewhere in the Mac itself. Is it possible to get OS X up and running by myself, and are there other ways to solve this problem?
