How to restart network services in ubuntu 14.04?

This command does not work!
sudo service networking restart
Stop network service eth0 doesn't work either. I have the network configured in the GUI.
sudo ifdown eth0
How to overcome the moment? It would not be desirable each time as reconfigured a network - to reboot machines!

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up
