How to protect yourself when working with Wi-Fi?

Very often you have to work through a "foreign" wi-fi. Accordingly, I thought about my safety.
Every time I connect to Wi-Fi, it doesn’t matter if it’s with a password or not (public), at the beginning I connect to the VPN, only after that I start working.
And the question arose - is it safe enough? For example, I came to the office, connected to a secure Wi-Fi, with a password, and the admin did proxying and, for example, sniffs all the data of all connected users for their bad purposes. Will a VPN save me from this?
Let me also explain that I use my own VNP, not from third-party services. It's just a home router with a VPN server.
In general, I will put the question even wider - how will I be completely safe from the fact that my Wi-Fi data will be stolen from me? I often work with rather private information, so I'm worried.

Quite secure, although the RC4 algorithm is considered obsolete and PPTP is implementation dependent and susceptible to mitm attacks. It is better to switch to more "persistent" VPNs.
But you need to take into account the traffic that goes to the VPN. Including DNS.
