How to properly rollback packages after a failed upgrade?

Question to the gurus, what is the "correct" way to roll back packages after an unsuccessful update.
Let's say you updated some package from the ports and after the update found that something stopped working. Your actions?

Demolish the package and install the previous version :-) In general, you can install freu on ZFS, and take a snapshot before any complex manipulations. If something went wrong, just roll back the snapshot.
