How to properly build the kernel for Ubuntu 14.04?

I'm trying to build my own kernel for Ubuntu 14.04.
I take 3.13.0-37 as a basis:
apt-get source linux-image-3.13.0-37-generic
I do exactly as it is written in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel
When I reboot, I catch an error as described here: askubuntu.com/questions/15515/disk-by-uuid- not-det...
Unfortunately, the initramfs console does not respond to the keyboard, so it's impossible to diagnose.
If you overwrite the kernel from the delivery again:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-3.13.0-37-generic

it loads fine. The build runs without visible errors, dpkg -i does exactly the same as the vanilla package. / and /boot are located on the same btrfs volume.
What can be wrong?
