How to participate in an OpenSource project?

Good afternoon habrasoobshchestvo. Do you have experience working in an Open Source project, and if so, how did you get there? Now I have some free time and would really like to participate in the development of something from the world of Open Source (preferably PHP). Thanks in advance for advice

Personally, I used two approaches:
- "Ask for it" in a project that is interesting to me;
- I registered on several forums for programmers and after a while I had "invitations" to many projects.

Choose a framework that you like, and write a component for it, posting it to the public, if everything goes well, it will go on by itself.

Start simple. Take something from what you use, add / fix / optimize something and send a patch to the author. Or yes, fork something on github. Or stir up your project there, someone else will fork it then.
