How to overlay a sports score on a video stream?

We are broadcasting video from a tennis court (stream from an ip camera --> Wowza), but now we have such a task: we need to impose a dynamic score on it.
The issue of data delivery has been resolved and is not fundamental, I am interested in how to generate a picture and overlay it on a video stream.
What are the options for solving this problem? I have an idea to make the score as an overlay on flash or html5, but how to embed it in the video stream.... I would like to get by with open-source solutions, for example ffmpeg\vlc.

vlc can overlay any image or text, here was my question on a similar topic, maybe there will be something useful for you.

In general, there are ready-made software solutions, look for video switchers (programs), they are designed for broadcasting switching between cameras and overlaying an account with various functions. (example: vMix 2012)
