How to optimize todo list?

I decided to write the first pet-project (ToDo list). I didn’t come up with anything better than when adding (removing) tasks, adding (deleting) them immediately to the database and automatically updating the page. But I am sure that this approach is most incorrect. Are there any ideas or tips to optimize this process?
I write in JS + Node.js (Express) MySQL database.
