How to negotiate with a freelance client?
Sorry, this is my first freelancing job. But it's just kind of hell.
Took the order, the girl said that you need to add a color-picker to the site so that buyers can choose the color of the product. I added and designed the checkout page accordingly. I added goods, at first I said that 50 then 89 and now 105.
Well, okay, it seems to be okay, I spent a couple of days of tedious work on this. So she told me:
- let's change the home page, I want like this ... did it.
- Let's change about us ... did ..
-But I would also like to change the blog ... Well, we haven't finished with the blog yet, wait, I'll write articles now. Okay, I'll wait, I think.
Today it sends .. I want to completely redo the single-product page so that it looks like this, well, the checkout page should look like this, well, we’ll finish off a couple of changes ... Oh, and yes, I want an animation so that the bird flies in the header.
Actually the question is ... Is this normal? What to do friends?
It seems to be a pity for a couple of weeks of work, but as soon as I imagine that there will be changes again soon, I think that we should quit before it’s too late ...

- we talked today, promises to pay extra, didn’t discuss the amount, but today there were no more desires!

contract needs to be drawn up. or immediately discuss what you first do together tz - approve it - and everything that will be in excess of tz - goes with a separate tariff
and then let them come up with anything that their heart desires - it will be paid separately.
If they pay for all this, then rejoice that there is a job.
If they do not pay, then ask for payment for what has already been done and agree on payment for new Wishlist.
Before the conversation, sew into the code a function that removes changes after a certain number, for example, so that if they do not have time to agree, then something stops working.
Freelancing rule number 1 - do not work with women
Freelancing rule number 2 - do not work with idiots
Seriously, when you took the order, were the conditions agreed there? If there were, then boldly answer that for all the "surplus", take an additional fee. There is no need to make concessions to the customer beyond all measure, otherwise they will sit on you and go. You need to clearly understand the framework yourself and make it clear to the customer.
Let me sum up everything written, talk about TK, let you have a clear list of tasks for a certain amount, in fact the task for which you were hired is completed, therefore ask for money for the work that you have done, so that it is not offensive, make sure and make sure that your work can be done destroy, if she refuses to pay, then she is a fiddle.
Always work according to the TOR, Vasya does not want to send you the TOR, say that you will make it yourself and agree, only after agreement, start work
You need to politely explain that this is a fix-price contract, and you did everything that was agreed. Let him transfer money, this mode of operation will be comfortable for both of you. If this is UpWork, then you can pay there in excess of the amount set without opening a new job. I had that a couple of times. The main thing is to get paid, as you have already noticed. Alas, the first order often goes like this, I have already heard a couple of stories, the customer is cunning, understands that you need to receive an order (in the sense of done), and squeezes all the juice. Try to agree: they say, I have already done a lot, let's do this and that, write each other a good review. And further, in a new task.
And about the return of the money - here I'm not sure, let the experienced comrades correct it. I mean that while you have not received the money - this project is not visible to anyone in your profile, if you received it - you can return it (refund), it will disappear from the list, but I'm almost sure that it will ruin the Job Success rating. Well, there’s another moral: it’s better to learn how to negotiate with a client on the first project and a small budget than when there is a huge portfolio and a budget of several thousand.
Since we are talking about finishing touches / Wishlist here - this answer applies only to them:
1. The cost of an hour of work is negotiated in advance . If you didn’t indicate earlier (if you already forgot, but it’s better to never allow this) - you can calculate: divide the cost of all the work done (for which you agreed in advance) by the time already spent and announce this amount to the Customer.
2. The order is as follows: Wishlist => determination of labor costs (time * complexity * rate) => execution => demonstration through TeamViewer => receiving money => transferring what was done to the hosting / server of the Customer.
In such cases, if the Wishlist does not end, and the client frankly sat on his neck, sometimes it’s easier to return the money and forget it like a bad dream, having concluded that you need to absolutely completely prescribe in advance about all additional work and what to do if something doesn’t work for you approached.
Naivete is on the rise. If you are silent, then they will sit on your neck and legs will hang down. Moreover, with a probability of 90%, no one will appreciate selfless work. Therefore, as soon as Wishlist - immediately raise the issue of payment. At least more respect and saved time, and ideally money and more constructive TK.
