How to make multiple jobs from one computer?

Hello.
Today at the university they put us in a laboratory room. There were 20 monitors with a mouse and keyboard, and 1 is clearly not the most powerful computer. All 20 jobs worked more or less normally! Enough for an office worker. What is interesting is not just a computer divided into 20 monitors. It was possible to work at a computer only when the laboratory assistant allowed it on his computer, and he could easily monitor all the monitors. Moreover, when the laboratory assistant allowed us to use one of the workstations, we logged into the account as on a regular computer, and everyone had their own desktop like a regular computer, and it worked like a regular computer.
Tell me how to organize it? I once divided the computer into 2 computers, but here something is completely different.
