How to make findPreference work in Activity?

What is the point: you need findPreference to work in MainActivity, that is, with AppCompatActivity, and not with PreferenceFragment.
Many options have been tried, but so far a working one has not been found.

Preference preference_touch = findPreference("touch_mode");
                preference_touch.setEnabled(!preferences.getBoolean("basic_mode", false));
