How to make an even space with rounded edges in an ellipse in Illustrator?

I'm trying to make an icon that should have an ellipse with a space . I've

seen a bunch of similar icons on the Internet, but I don't understand how to make the edges of this gap perfectly even. I experimented with pathfinder, but every time too sharp corners are formed or it turns out crooked.

Please tell me, maybe there is some kind of life hack about which I don’t know due to inexperience.

For a stroke, turn on rounded ends.
