How to make an animated site with navigation?

Here is an example: hollow.org.uk
I have a task to make a website similar (in terms of functionality/animations) where about 1500(!) images will animate across the screen.
I have never encountered such problems before and I don't even know where to start.
There is a well-known three.js framework (bundled with GSAP apparently), there are entire engines with a graphical interface like Verge3d or blend4web.
Please advise something on the stack.

1500 images is a very large load. And I'm sure everything should be in good quality. Even according to estimates, 500kb per photo is 750 megabytes in total. I don't even know what to do it on to make it work somehow... Canvas?
