How to make a smoothly expanding div inside a flex div?

Good day.
Can you please tell me how to implement a smoothly expanding div in the center of a div with display: flex? I just can't think of a way for this expanding div to "expand" the same way in all directions: left-right, up-down.
Maybe there is a solution somewhere ;)
