How to make a router from a PC?

Good time of the day!
The situation is as follows, there are several sets consisting of a motherboard, RAM, processor and power supply. The question is divided into two parts
1) tell me the manual or how to dig to install a router OS on a PC. There is a kamunalka, we have 2 routers, I want to put this PC as a hotspot, and from it there are already 2 routers, like access points. What OS can you install? I thought about mikrotikOs but I don't want to spend money on buying a license. Maybe something will happen with dd-wrt? Or what other alternatives are there? But while I see wrt as the best option, the question is how to put it on a PC?
2) I wrote above about what I have and I really don’t want to spend extra money. More specifically - on the hdd. Is it possible to install tighter open-wrt using only ram memory? If not, what are the inexpensive alternatives?

@RicoX

Install Pfsence and immediately get a ready-made router that boots from a USB flash drive and all settings are made through the web interface no more complicated than DD-WRT.

1. pfsense macrodmin.ru/2011/11/ustanovka-pfsense (frya, of course, not a Linux, but this solution is reliable and has a lot of features).
2. Install on a flash drive,
