How to make a retina image if there is no large image?

Is it possible to somehow make a retina image out of a non-retina one? I have a 320x280 mobile image and it doesn't look nice on retina displays. I tried to simply enlarge the picture, but the effect became even worse. How do you solve such a problem. The layout was made by a freelance designer and it disappeared as the customer says. What do i do ?

We survived, now there is a retina of the picture ...
Use "Google: search by image" and find a larger size.
