How to make a distributed information system at home?

Which method will be the least labor intensive? What books/articles/videos would you recommend on this topic? It is necessary to implement for academic purposes, on one computer. A bunch of database and Java is desirable. I hope the question is clear. Any input is welcome!

Academic goals are different, respectively, and will need to be done in different ways. It is only obvious that some kind of virtualization system will be needed to emulate distribution in the presence of only one physical host.
