Take the source code from the museum and try to assemble it. I'm not sure what will work without problems on modern versions of the libraries, but try it.
Download and build manually :) In this case, you may need to install specific software - libraries, tools - you will need to carefully study the output of configure, if it is used there. For assembly, I would deploy a separate virtual machine based on a distribution approximately corresponding in time - this way there will be less chance of running into a lib whose API has changed so much since then that it breaks the assembly.
