How to handle ajax in drupal without writing a module?

Hello, I googled a lot on this topic, I even found an article on Habré about the wonderful ajax in drupal, but all the information suggests using a hook in a module, and I would not want to write a module for this purpose.

Everything depends on the task at hand. what exactly needs to be done? if you just embed js, then you can fool around in the template.
