How to get the most out of your Widescreen monitor?

The transition from 4:3 to 16:9 is quite painful.

Too wide screen, vision almost always needs to be concentrated on the left side of the screen, since

I first pinned the Taskbar to the right side of the screen.
As advised above, use non-maximized windows. Win7 has great shortcuts for attaching a 1/2-screen window to the left or right side - so, on the widescreen, you can conveniently position, for example, the IDE and browser windows at the same time.

As an option: rotate the monitor screen vertically.
Convenient for some tasks.

You can arrange windows on a grid. The simplest example is a browser on the left, a code editor on the right.

For firefox, you can put such a plugin treestyletab , which will place the tabs on the side.

In fact, there is only discomfort for the first few days. You yourself will not notice how you get used to such a monitor. I switched from 4:3 to 16:9 about a year ago, I got used to it right away, now I feel discomfort behind 4:3 monitors.
It will be more difficult to get used to if you have to take turns using either 16:9 or 4:3. So, I recommend using only one type of monitor both at work and at home.

Full screen - wow!
That's so good.

Everything that is not comfortably displayed should be done in normal windows, and not maximized to full screen.
If you still have an old monitor, then connect both if you have all the favorable conditions, such as space and connectors - very convenient for work.

switch to normal windows, especially since most sites are sharpened for 1024, and a rare program needs a wide screen, except maybe an IDE or graphics. For windows there is a cool Sizer program that sets its size in pixels
And yes 16:10 is better

When you work with code, and do not climb on the Internet, there is no problem with the width, I would use a monitor one and a half times wider at the same height.
By the way, it is faster and easier to move your eyes horizontally than vertically - a medical fact, there is no prooflink at hand now, but it is easy to google
