How to get started in an open source project?

Hello, I want to join an open source project, but I don't quite understand how to do it right. How does it usually happen? Is there a list of tasks to complete? Or maybe you need to look for some bugs yourself or something that can be improved? Please share your experience.

you go to github, choose an interesting project, look at the issues section -> it says what they already need, or you start this search yourself (if you want to add something yourself), well, you start to figure it out.
