How to get a list of section categories without using PHP in a template?

The bottom line is this: I need to make something like a menu - it should be a list of categories of one section (by design, this is a product catalog with a bunch of all sorts of categories). The problem is that I have hardly worked with Joomla and I can hardly get into this system. I need to somehow get the list of categories, preferably without using PHP, in the template. Moreover, it is also desirable that this list is not displayed on all pages, but only on certain ones. Should I write a module?
