How to fix CapsLock layout switching in Ubuntu 20.04?
[solution] From the discussion, and from my observation of Ubuntu 20.04 on Wayland, the best option is to switch to a different distro, or at least to Ubuntu with a different shell. After trying a few, I settled on Kubuntu - everything related to layouts works out of the box, and the system layout is forwarded in virtualbox, and there is no need to put recaps in Windows
PS. Kubuntu did not enter at all, like other other tried distributions. And here they fixed the Gnome: they reinstalled ubuntu 20.04 - everything works.
There were no problems, but I switched from Unity in 16.04 to Gnome in 20.04. Now I am seeing the following:
Normally, you can’t switch to CapsLock (but I’m used to it). I put gnome-tweaks, and in it in the additional layout options I find the good old keyboard setting and set the switch to CapsLock. But there are problems: 1 - loss of focus in some windows and on some sites when switching layouts, 2 - with the Russian layout (yes, with any except the first one), the Win key does not open the menu.
The only solution to this problem that I found is to switch to Wayland. And everything was fine until I got into the Windows virtual machines on Virtualbox: there, the switch was also made using CapsLock via ReCaps, and it stopped working. In general, the CapsLock key is not thrown into the virtual machine (only if the entire keyboard is not redirected to it).
If you return to x.org, then CapsLock is remarkably thrown into the virtual machine, but we return to the beginning of the story ...
What do you advise?
If it is impossible to solve the problem head-on, maybe you can automatically throw the keyboard into the virtual machine by focus?
One caveat: tips on setting up the keyboard from older versions of Ubuntu (even on Gnome) do not fit - something has been globally changed there.

Helped me on Ubuntu 20.04 in terminal:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options "['grp:caps_toggle']"
Search through dconf-editor.
All settings on the clave are there.
Better yet, go back to 18.04, install a bare system with mini.iso and then roll Unity and get a clean Ubuntu 18.04 + LightDM + Unity!
And no troubles!
I have it set up like this.
Enjoying the life!
Starting from 19.10, this will no longer work cleanly.
Unity has been shamanized and now the Gnome Shell session is being screwed into the load, and even Unity itself with an admixture of Mate and a bunch of crap.
