Fedora 16/Gnome 64 bit and font mapping

I sit stubbornly on a fedora because I have to. Before that, I lived under Windows all my life and did not know any problems. But, now I'm working in Fedora 16 and I can normally only look at the console. I get the impression that each program renders fonts differently, and each tries to make a bunch of mistakes in this rendering. The feeling that someone just covered the monitor with paint, and did not draw a letter. It cuts straight into the eyes.

Well, the question is, where can I read about it well? How does Gnome build fonts? How can this be influenced? And how can it be improved? Do not offer salted Google answers, because it did not help much. I really want to get to the bottom of the issue.
