How to find the right RAM for your computer?

I have 2GB of RAM, I would like to expand it. I want to buy 4GB in the second slot. Will both work?

In addition to work, there are still performance issues, namely, dual / triple channel mode, which is supported by almost all desktop motherboards, its inclusion can give up to 10% increase (if you look at the work of the archiver, for example).
To enable this mode (as far as I remember it happens automatically), it is necessary that all memory work at the same timing parameters, but even in this case, when using memory sticks from different manufacturers (most often if it is noname), this memory mode can not turn on.
RAM sellers even provide positions in the catalogs, immediately 2-4-6 memory sticks, which are guaranteed to work in this mode.
