How to find out what program is busy (used) external hard drive on macbook?

I've been using MacOS for a little over a week now. And for several days now I can not properly remove the external hard drive.
Macbook won't let you eject the external hard drive citing it being used by another program. There is nothing in the tasks except for the finder. Maybe someone faced this problem?
